Nettlecombe: the Marquis of Lorne
An attractive pub in a tucked away setting in the hamlet of Nettlecombe – viewed on a drab, rainy Easter Saturday.

The Marquis of Lorne Inn, Nettlecombe, Dorset
This country inn has an interesting name. The highest-profile Marquis seems to have been Sir John George Edward Henry Douglas Sutherland Campbell, K.G., G.C.M.G., who was Governor-General of Canada in the 1870's and 80's.
However, the pub sign depicts a gentleman from the 17th. century.

Marquis of Lorne, Nettlecombe
The Marquis of Lorne was the husband of Princess Louise, fourth daughter and sixth child of Queen Victoria, whom he married in 1871. Although of noble blood, being the son and heir to the Duke of Argyll, it was not royal blood, and so the marriage caused a stir in the royal family. However, the member of that family with the most say, namely Queen Victoria herself, was not "not amused", and sanctioned the marriage. This is one of a number of pubs named after him.
