Spirit of Portland
Spirit of Portland is a striking sculpture created by Joanna Szuwalska, and made from a single block of Portland stone. It depicts a fisherman and quarryman to represent the two main industries of the island. The sculpture is situated at Priory Corner, alongside the main road leading from Underhill to Tophill. It overlooks Chesil Beach, and across to the mainland. The sculpture was officially unveiled on 18 August 2000. The chosen site of the sculpture was close to the point where stone was once loaded onto trucks to travel along the Merchant's Railway to Castletown for shipping.
