Portrait Bench at the start of the Rodwell Trail
The Portrait Bench at the start of the Rodwell Trail, Abbotsbury Road, features three figures in steel who immortalise the town’s heroes as voted for by the public – the coastguards, lifeboat crews and fishermen. The Coastguard on the left is based on Robert Treadwell who died on October 13, 1944, one of two coastguards and nine Royal Navy officers to lose their lives when the LCT(A) 2454 landing craft ran aground on Chesil Beach. Mr Treadwell, who was on shore helping with the rescue effort, was washed into the sea and drowned. He was posthumously decorated with the Sea Gallantry Medal and is buried at the Verne Naval Cemetery on Portland.

Starting the Rodwell Trail
The former railway line is now a popular cycle path through Weymouth and on to Wyke Regis. To measure the way, a marker post is placed everty 500 metres and features something with a nature theme. The start is here, with a Robin.

Some figures have been installed at the former railway line's junction with Abbotsbury Road. They appear to represent some of the people mostly associated with the town and its activities.
