Piddletrenthide School: the mystery of the "missing" school gates (1)
This is the old village school building of 1848, the gift of one John Bridge, a local benefactor. In Jo Draper's excellent book "Dorset - The Complete Guide" she describes the school gates as dating from the 16th century that had once graced the tomb of Lady Margaret Beaufort in Westminster Abbey. There is also an illustration in the book of the same gates outside the school before its closure and conversion to a private house. When this book illustration was compared with the old *English Heritage 'Images of England' database description and photo, it was obvious that the gates they were describing were not the historic ones. Their photo featured the same modern replacements as in my photo above, confusing these gates with the old historic ones. http://www.imagesofengland.org.uk/Details/Default.aspx?id=104951&mode=adv.
Which begged the question - what had happened to the original gates?

Listed houses, Piddletrenthide
Two attached houses with banded flint and either brick or rubble.
The more recently thatched house is listed as "House adjoining Pear Tree House to the North" https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1118799?section=official-list-entry . The map shows "Middle Thatch" but also implies there is another property at this end, and the name "Corner Cottage" appears on the wall. Moreover, the listing, dating from 1984, begins "House and shop".
The further house, Pear Tree Cottage, is listed as Pear Tree House ) (first listing 1956) https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1304341?section=official-list-entry .
