Higher Melcombe House
Built by Sir John Horsey in 1570, Higher Melcombe is the surviving wing of a much larger Elizabethan house called Melcombe Horsey, after the former medieval village near here. The attached chapel on the right was added by the new owner Sir Thomas Freke in 1610, using materials from a nearby C14 chapel that had fallen into disuse after the Reformation. Now called Higher Melcombe, the house is currently owned by the family of the owners of the local brewery company Hall & Woodhouse Ltd. Grade I Listed.
