Reconstruction, Workshops, Dorchester
The inside of some carpenters workshops being reconstructed due to damage by dry rot. The wood has been partially protected with dark brown creosote substitute. Real creosote distilled from coal tar can only be used by specially licensed companies because of its carcinogenic nature.

Frozen Leaf
This leaf had fallen from a yellow plum tree and landed on the roof of a black car. As the temperature dropped and the air temperature reached 0 C, the damp leaf started to freeze. Meanwhile water (dew) had been condensing on the roof of the car and had covered the roof with a thin film of water. Ice started to form on the leaf which froze before the water on the roof froze. The leaf acted as a nucleation site and the water on the roof started to freeze at the points where the leaf touched the roof. The ice grew outward from these contact points to form the linear "stems" of the plant-like ice pattern. There are six main ice stems leading from the leaf, one of which split in two as it grew. Small side arm branches of ice grew off these stems. The side branches are very straight linear crystals of ice that grew out from the stems parallel to each other like the barbs of a feather growing out from the main shaft. The ice pattern grew and extended across the roof, the growth of one crystal only being stopped when it hit another crystal. It is still not known why ice crystals grow in the way they do. An ice crystal starts at the microscopic scale as a disc but the crystal growth becomes unstable and becomes dendritic (tree like). The growth is affected by the atmosphere, the temperature, the air humidity, dust and impurities and in this case probably by the dirt and cleaning residues such as wax left on the roof of the car. At one point in the top right hand corner a "normal shaped" hexagonal ice crystal can be seen, similar to a snow flake. The swirling curved dendritic ice branches that grew out from the leaf, grew round the geometric hexagonal crystal and where they met, both crystals stopped growing. The hexagon grew out from one nucleation point ( a speck of dust or something similar) at its centre. The scale of the photo can be judged as the leaf is the same width as a 50p piece
