The former New Inn, South Street
Former Eldridge Pope pub The New Inn, 27 South Street. It was converted and sold in 1989 as three retail units with offices above. The offices were converted into flats in 2010 when the occupiers ceased trading and found it impossible to rent out, due to competition from new office space with parking in Poundbury. Note the EP crest at second floor level and the original Victorian glazed tile frontage.

Former New Inn, 27 and 28 South Street, Dorchester
A former Eldridge Pope pub converted to three shops and offices in 1989. The offices became flats in 2010. In 1842 and 1844 directories William Harris is listed as a beer retailer in South street and in 1851 and 1855 at New Inn. I don't know if it closed for a period but in Kelly's 1889 and 1895 directories I can find no mention of New Inn or 27 or 28 South Street. Other directory entries include, 1859 Edward Wortley, 1875 William Darch (also coal merchant), 1911 Mrs Mary Jane Banks, 1915 Walter Billett and more recently Bill Trueman.

P&J Butchers Dorchester
One of the few traditional butchers in Dorchester. Located at the southern end of South St, the main shopping street of the town close to the junction with South Walks and Trinity St. The shop is very clean and bright and sells the full range of meats one would expect. It is sandwiched between a dry cleaner and a leather goods shop.
