Thomas Hardy Locations, Schooling, Dorchester
Hardy's second school was here in Dorchester at the school of Isaac Last in Greyhound Yard. He started there in 1848 at 8 years old. The site was obliterated when Waitrose's supermarket was built and this is all that can be seen there now.

Thomas Hardy Locations, The Mayor of Casterbridge (2)
This is Barclays Bank in South St Dorchester and in the novel Hardy made this the house of Henchard who sold his wife, came to Casterbridge, made a lot of money and became mayor and then lost it all.

The Dorset Shepherd inscription, Durngate Street
This inscription to the statue lies behind. William Barnes (1801-1886) whose verse appears was Dorset's famous dialect poet. He and his wife Julia first lived in a house in Durngate Street on his return to Dorchester from Mere. William's statue stands outside St Peter's Church Dorchester and he later lived at Winterborne Came Rectory while he was vicar of there and of Whitcombe. See Image and Image
