Mowbray Commemorative Stone, Epworth
This photo shows the commemorative stone in the churchyard outside St Andrews Parish Church. It has been erected by the Epworth Magna Carta 800 Society, presumably in 2015 to mark 800 years of the signing of the Magna Carta at Runnymede in 1215. The blue circular disc on the stone has the following wording: THE 12th CENTURY MANOR HOUSE OF WILLIAM DE MOWBRAY (1173 - 1224) STOOD HERE ON THE VINEGARTH ESTATE HE WAS ONE OF THE 25 BARONS ENTRUSTED WITH THE ENFORCEMENT OF THE TERMS OF MAGNA CARTA At the front end of the stone can be seen the arms of the Mowbray family with a demi lion rampant on a red background.
