Site of "The Plague Well", Burghwallis
The Plague Well was most likely in use in 1349 at the time of the early plague known as the ‘Black Death’ that killed 30-50% of the country’s population. It originally had a stone roof with seats and probably was in existence at the time of the great plague of 1665.

"The 12th century St Helen’s church has a notable Norman doorway, and by the side of the church is an old cross. There is distinctive herringbone masonry in the walls of the nave and chancel, and the chancel has a lovely vaulted screen made in medieval days, which was restored in 1881.
