River Trent, Gainsborough
Gainsborough is the last settlement of any significant size heading downstream on the River Trent, and owes its original development to its role as an inland port. Today an attractive walk runs along the town bank; the opposite bank is across the county boundary in Nottinghamshire.

Wharf in Gainsborough
It had started raining hard so I left our helmswoman to it and went below for a while. So, taken from inside of the narrowboat I am not sure this is the exact location but it is very close.

River Trent at Gainsborough
Gainsborough was the main port on the River Trent and the most important centre for the river trade in the 18th and 119th centuries. Its shipbuilding yards have gone, as have most of its wharves and many of its warehouses. It was the limit of navigation for sea-going vessels which gave rise to its importance. The port reached its greatest prosperity in the early 19th century but from the mid-century it was in decline. This view downriver is from a small park next to Caskgate Street.
