Gainsborough was the main port on the River Trent and the most important centre for the river trade in the 18th and 119th centuries. Its shipbuilding yards have gone, as have most of its wharves and many of its warehouses. It was the limit of navigation for sea-going vessels which gave rise to its importance. The port reached its greatest prosperity in the early 19th century but from the mid-century it was in decline. This view downriver is from a small park next to Caskgate Street.
