Ordnance Survey documents indicate that in 1845 a benchmark was levelled at 737.45 feet above Liverpool Datum on a stable near this location. See www.bench-marks.org.uk/bm25435

Former Methodist Chapel at Aysgarth
The chapel was built by local craftsmen in 1900. It replaced a cottage on the site which had been used for services since 1766. the final service was held in April 2019 (https://rb.gy/fajyhe Richmondshire Today).

Sign for the George and Dragon
George refers to England's patron saint, who lived in the third or fourth century, in reality very little is known about him. The legend of George fighting the dragon first appeared in the Golden Legend centuries after his death. The legend itself has done St George a disservice as it has caused many to say that he did not exist.
