The Former Crakehall Railway Station
Crakehall railway station was first opened in 1856 by the Bedale and Leyburn Railway which later became part of the London and North Eastern Railway and then the Eastern Region of British Railways on nationalisation in 1948. It was then closed by British Railways in April 1954. The track still passes through the station site and is now part of the Wensleydale Railway. The crossing is now manually operated by a crossing keeper when the heritage line is operating. The station building remains intact and is used as a private house.

Crakehall railway station (site), Yorkshire
Opened in 1856 by the Bedale & Leyburn Railway as an extension of the line from Northallerton. Closed in 1954, and although the Wensleydale Railway now runs through the site, the station remained closed at the time this image was taken. View east towards Bedale.

Former Crakehall railway station
Crakehall Station was once in use on the line linking Northallerton with Garsdale, but its use would have come to an end over 50 years ago. Now it stands alongside the privately owned Wensleydale Railway and there are plans to restore its platform etc.

Manually operated level crossing
A volunteer of the Wensleydale Railway opens the gates at Crakehall level crossing. There are no more than a few services per day passing, so it would not be economical to automate the crossing or have paid staff on duty.
