Cowling Hall
Cowling Hall, built sometime after the Raper family took over the manor C.1665.
They demolished an earlier manor house, built by the Ayscough's, of which the northern wing was retained as servants quarters & stables. The Hall was remodelled again in the early 18thC with strengthened walls, a new roof, and a more classical appearance.

Cowling Old Hall
More correctly this is in fact the north wing of a manorial complex built in the 14thC by the Ayscough family. The old manor house,a castellated gatehouse and a southern wing have long since been demolished. The garden wall in this photo was once much taller, and it was also castellated. Cowling is an ancient settlement, it was held pre-conquest by Earl Edwin of Northumbria, and by Robert de Munster, the servant of Count Alan of Brittany in 1086.

Cowling
One hesitates to call this the main street as it is the only street or lane in this hamlet. This is not the only Cowling in North Yorkshire, there being a village of the same name on the A6068 close by the Lancashire border to the west of Keighley.

Mullioned Window in Cowling Old Hall
This first floor window was inserted into the west wall of the north wing in the 15th-16thC. On the south face is a sundial which was added in the 18thC.

Cowling Hall
Queen Anne house and Grade II listed building, in need of a little renovation.
It stands next to a former manor house called Old Cowling, which is much older than its neighbour - and Grade I Listed.
