Village sign, Gainford
This metalwork piece stands at the eastern end of Gainford by the A67. Its symbolism is not clear but it might refer to the spa which was so important in the 19th century history of the village.

A welcoming sign to Gainford
But any intended symbolism has been lost by the 'painting out' of any motto, leaving only three fishes and two roses recognisable to the uninitiated. Can anyone please re-interpret?

Carved stone plaque by the A67, in parish of Gainford (Teesdale District), Main Road, set in wall, near ground level, on South side of road, left of field gate. Erected by the Stockton & Barnard Castle Turnpike Trust in the 19th century.
Inscription reads:-
