Memorial Fountain near road to Stanhope Ford
Located on the south side of the main A689 road in the West End of Stanhope at the junction with the minor road that leads to Stanhope Ford. The Grade II Listed (Entry Number: 1277124), memorial fountain, dated 1877, was erected on behalf of the people of Stanhope, commemorating 'the late J.J. Roddam of New-Town'. John Joseph Roddam, a wealthy land agent for regional coal and lead owners, moved to Weardale from Newcastle in the 1830s. A well-known and respected resident of Stanhope, he built and owned nearby 'Newtown' house which was demolished and rebuilt around 1900. He died aged 48 in 1874. The memorial fountain was erected three years after the death of J.J.Roddam. It formerly occupied a central position in the village green but was moved to the side of 'Newtown' at the turn of the century. http://www.pmsa.org.uk/pmsa-database/9924/
