Walled garden at Black Hedley
One of the best features of the nice old farmstead at Black Hedley are the walls around the garden, built with the house in the 1750's.

Trough in garden wall
This in the C18 walls of the garden at Black Hedley. Perhaps it was a drinking trough for the animals.

The farmhouse at Black Hedley
This was built in 1750 by local landowner Humphrey Hopper, although partly rebuilt after a fire in 1930. It is a very grand building for a farmhouse and was always as much a country house as anything else. The garden walls are C18 originals.

Farm buildings at Black Hedley
This settlement dates back to medieval times. The present farm was built in 1750 by local landowner Humphrey Hopper. This building was probably added at a later date, around 1800 perhaps, and is a byer with hay lot above. Very typical for the area. A nice touch is the rounded corners to the door on the left. Obviously this was a superior type of farm.

Granary Cottage, Black Hedley
This originally formed part of the courtyard layout of farm buildings here. Built in the C18 and early C19. This building on the end was converted to residential. The entrance to the farmyard is on the left through the archway in the wall.

Fell Gate
Nice old cottage on the B6278. I think it may originally have been the gatehouse for the big farm at Black Hedley.

View from Black Hedley
Looking to the south over to Consett. The big house here was presumably located in this spot partly to take advantage of the open views.
