The Old Rectory, Edmundbyers
This stands at the north side of the churchyard, from where this view is taken. This is one wing only, most of the building is behind here, out of view. The original build was 1738, but there were substantial additions and alterations in the second half of the 19th century. I believe it's a private dwelling now.

St. Edmund's Church, Edmondbyers
The church is thought to have been built around 1150 AD, but some architectural details are Saxon in style. The church was restored in around 1740, when the adjacent rectory was built. In the early 19th C the single Norman arch between the nave and chancel was replaced by the triple arch seen in Image Further work was done later in the 19th C, including removal of the gallery at the west end, a three-deck pulpit and the 18th C box pews. {Source: Church leaflet.}

St. Edmund's Church, Edmondbyers - list of Rectors
See Image It always amazes me how few rectors there have been for these ancient churches. St. Edmunds dates from the middle of the 12th C, but the list (with a few small time gaps) covers nearly 800 years during which time there were only 44 rectors - and some of them served for quite short periods.

St. Edmund's Church, Edmondbyers - wooden vestry
See Image The vestry was built in 1920 with objects donated to the church: the door is from Image (photographed by Bill Cresswell); the door surrounds from a 17th C pew from Auckland Castle; the east side comes from an organ case from All Saints, Clifton, near Bristol; and the rest from timber from Durham Cathedral. {Source: Church leaflet.}
