The road name signs say "School Avenue" - that is the road running from left to right across the lower part of the image. Prospect View is a side turning off School Avenue, in West Rainton.

Two fine Edwardian villas - Linden House to the left, Cathedral House to the right. Needless to say, the nearby station (Leamside) on the Leamside Line has long since ceased to be.

Station Road, West Rainton
Station Road in West Rainton leads downhill to the site of Leamside railway station, which closed in 1953. The station was behind the buildings where trees have now grown and matured. In the background, the concrete bridge carries a country lane over the A1(M) trunk road.

Station Road, West Rainton
Road signs warn of a double bend in the road, and a hump-backed bridge which carries the road over a railway line. Originally the road had continued straight ahead, with a level crossing across the railway. The railway line is now disused.

View southward, towards Durham and Ferryhill: ex-NER (Newcastle-Washington/Sunderland - Pelaw - Ferryhill/Durham) loop line. As evidenced by the greenery on the track, the double track 'Leamside Line' had been mothballed since 1991, having been maintained as diversionary line for the ECML to Newcastle via Chester-le-Street: it was in fact the main line until 1872. Many collieries connected with it and much freight passed here in former years before coal-mining ended in the 1980s. Leamside station was closed 5/10/53, passenger services for Newcastle having ceased between Ferryhill and Washington via Penshaw from 28/7/41 and on to Pelaw from 9/9/63 and Durham - Penshaw 4/5/64. In recent years, various plans have been put forward for reopening the Leamside Line, but so far none has come to fruition, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leamside line .
