Kepier Hospital gatehouse
The fine old gatehouse is close to the River Wear and on the edge of Durham city centre. The building has attractively eroded stonework as might be expected from a one of its age, having been (re)built between 1333 and 1345.

View north from near the A690 across the river and Frankland Farm to the Newton Hall housing estates area of Durham. The railway into Durham to Gilesgate Station ran along what is now the line of the A690 road. The grid reference NZ281435 given is the stretch of river about 400 metres from the road.

Houses in Durham
These houses are at the beginning of the promontory of land which ends with the rock on which Durham Cathedral is built within a loop of the river Wear. Beyond the houses, and across the river, is a sewage works and further away Framwellgate Moor. The rough ground in the foreground was once alongside a railway, now replaced by the A690 road.
