Penpont
This is a picturesque small village which lies on the Main Road between Thornhill and Moniaive. It is most well known as the birthplace of the famous Explorer and Writer Joseph Thomson who carried out numerous Expeditions in Africa and was the first person to spot "Thomson's Gazelle" to which he gave his name.

Former tollhouse
Surveyed by the Milestone Society. In the middle of Penpont on Main Street at the junction with Keir Street is this substantial building. latterly it has been a shop and is now tearooms. It may have been built very early in the 19C. In 1841 George Swan aged 40 was the tollkeeper and he lived in the house with his wife and 7 children.
