King Street junction and war memorial
Looking north along King Street to the traffic lights at the junction with High Street. The impressive war memorial on the left has a plaque reading "To the glory of God and in memory of the men who gave their lives in the Great war 1914-1918, live thou for England, we for England died". Good words, but probably not a sentiment that metal thieves consider when they see war memorials like this as easy targets these days. The memorial has bronze figures depicting a helmeted soldier with rifle, protecting a young child. Under are the names of 121 men who fell in World War 1 and 40 in World War 2. It was unveiled in July 1927 by General Sir Horace Smith Dorrian and the sculptor was William Aumonier.
