Oakthorpe Colliery shafts
Looking north-east across a small clearing to Willesley Wood. Here there are two concrete mine shaft markers (the second is just visible in the long grass further back to the left), built when the shafts were capped in 1991. They have metal plaques registering 'Oakthorpe No 1' and 'Oakthorpe No 2' and capping reference numbers. The deep mining here closed in 1885, later giving way to open cast sites in the area. http://www.willesleywood.co.uk/willesley_pages/Page%203%20Mining.htm
