East Mill, Guthrie Street, Dundee
This rather dilapidated building is actually quite historic. It was built as a tannery in 1792 and converted to flax spinning in 1799, engined by Boulton & Watt. It is the oldest steam powered mill in Scotland with Y columns to carry the driving shaft. The cream building beyond is West Ward Works and until 2010 was the printing works of D C Thompson, on the site of the first fireproof mill in Dundee.

Ward Foundry and mosque, Dundee
The Ward Foundry was established in 1810 by J & C Carmichael to manufacture steam engines. This shows the c1880 new boiler shop with its riveting tower. The foundry closed in 1929 and was subsequently used by D C Thomson for paper storage. It is now in mixed occupancy and includes a mosque in its midst. This is a fascinating part of Dundee and I wish I had had more than the 2-3 hours I was allowed.

Tay Mill - Old or Hospital Ward Mill
The L-shaped mill block in the centre is one of the earliest parts of the complex and dates from 1835-6. The more recent long blocks along Lochee Road are to the right. Old Mill is on Brown Street and the junction with Guthrie Street is in front of the photographer. The chimney seen just above the roof of the Old Mill is part of the same complex and dated 1851.

Blinshall Street, Dundee. (South end)
The street contains a mix of buildings, converted former jute industry premises, buildings, modern student accommodation and a disused church. The former St Mary Magdalene Episcopal church was originally built as an Episcopal mission to the nearby mills of Blackness by Bishop Alexander Penrose Forbes.

West Ward Works
The printing works of D C Thompson date from 1959 and the 1960s by T Lindsay Gray and enclose an 1871 weaving shed. Printing ceased in 2010. Not the prettiest building but an important part of Dundee's history. It has been said Dundee was based on the 3 J's - jam, journalism and jute.
