Virginia Buildings, Seagate
Not being listed (presumably it is not yet old enough to merit inclusion), online details of this building are rather sketchy. It was built around 1903, but exactly who put up the money for it is unclear. The top floors are evidently split into residential flats, but one of the ground floor addresses is noted as being occupied by a local shipping company called RA and JH Mudie in 1910. The name of the building is intriguing, and may indicate that the block was originally the property of the shipping company. A brief piece I came across said that the company initially concentrated on bringing coal from the North of England to supply Dundee's jute industry (jute is a strong fibre), and then began exporting coal to the Baltic countries, before becoming a bit more of general shipping freight business around the time this building was built. There is a Virginia Building built quite a bit earlier in Glasgow, which was built by tobacco importers - Virginia referring to the US state which still provides a great deal of our tobacco today. It would make no sense for tobacco to be imported into Dundee - it is on the wrong side of the country - but I wonder if it was then exported further East from here?

Victorian block on Seagate
The former Robertsons Bond building on Seagate, just at the fringes of the central retail area. The building is category 'B' listed but looks in need of some TLC. Buildings like this deserve preservation, but unless a suitable role can be found for them, they are likely to decay.
