Railway points at Usan
The points, shown in the photo, mark the change from double to single track railway line at Usan. Between these points and Montrose lies the only single track rail on the east coast route between London and Aberdeen.

Railway equipment, Usan signalbox
An interesting piece of gear, possibly the slow moving load that I passed on the A1 a few weeks earlier. I am noticing more equipment that can run on normal wheels and rail bogies now. Perhaps they could use this to equip the trains that have to move around on the backs of lorries because it is too expensive to transport them using our lunatic railway system. Rails are being replaced where the Aberdeen - Dundee railway becomes single track approaching the Montrose viaducts.

North British Railway - Arbroath and Montrose
The North British's route to Aberdeen between Arbroath and Montrose was single track originally, and later doubled except for the Montrose viaducts. The railway, now the only route to Aberdeen from the south is descending towards Montrose from Usan signalbox. The run to Aberdeen was famous for the races between the North British and Caledonian railways (they ran through Strathmore via Coupar Angus and Forfar).
