The Anderton Boat Lift
This marvellous feat of engineering was fully restored to its former glory at the cost of millions. The lift brings canal traffic up from the river to the nearby canal via huge tanks full of water. These tanks with the barges inside are then lifted, one goes up while the other goes down using giant hydraulic rams. A visitor centre is now open on the banks of the canal and is a must if you visit this attraction.

Anderton Boat Lift
Seen from the grounds of the visitor centre. The white cabin is one of the original control cabins but is now superseded by a control room in the visitor centre. The gearing on the top is also superseded but has been retained so as not to change the appearance of the lift (this was a 1906-08 addition in any event and not part of the original lift).

Anderton boat lift and lower basin
The lift in its restored state (see shared description) is a popular tourist attraction. The whole site, despite the heritage being no more than three hundred years old, is protected with Scheduled Ancient Monument status.
