Soviet Nuclear Missile Control Room ... in Cheshire
This is one of the fascinating displays at the Hack Green Secret Nuclear Bunker ... now an excellent military museum. An information board states that this room was originally accommodation for drivers and maintenance staff. Now the reconstruction shows that in the event of a missile strike against the UK the two operators would have armed the missiles with special keys and launched them from the two red firing positions. Exterior view and description here: Image] This place is well worth a visit. There is a lot to see and think about, not just from this site, so I suggest a minimum of two to three hours, to stand and ponder.... See (and hear) the museum's superb website: http://www.hackgreen.co.uk/index.htm ... turn your speaker volume up first! :-)

I remember being short-wave mad in the 1950s and wanting one of those R1155 black receivers in the centre of the picture. All the radio "surplus" stores were selling them off even in the 1950s.
