Audlem Lock No 12 top gate, Cheshire
There are two ground paddles (almost in line), one on each side of the canal. Raising these allows water to enter the lock via culverts through the lock chamber walls. These should be used first if a boat is in the lock. There is another large gate paddle, which lets water rush through an opening halfway up the gate. This can cause the front of a boat to be flooded if opened before the vessel has risen about halfway up the lock. Care is needed. Not all lock gates have this additional gate paddle, which can produce a very fierce stream of water.
