Garlic Press Restaurant
Formerly the Image The pub was noted as the Rose and Crown on the 1875 Ordnance survey map. The land behind the pub was the site of the Congleton Union workhouse from 1844. The workhouse and its infirmary were renamed the Congleton Public Assistance Institution in 1930 and was finally renamed Arclid Hospital later in that decade. The hospital closed in 1993 and all buildings were demolished. I'm surprised the buildings weren't converted into luxury apartments. For more information on the history of the workhouse, see Peter Higginbotham's web site www.workhouses.org.uk.
