Saltisford canal arm, Warwick
An arm of the Warwick & Birmingham Canal, built in the 1790s and now part of the Grand Union Canal. The Saltisford wharf was the original terminus of the canal. It opened in 1799 and encouraged the industrial development of Warwick. By the 1980s the Saltisford arm was abandoned, part had been built on, and the rest was threatened by development. It was rescued by volunteers, who formed the Saltisford Canal Trust, which now manages the site. https://www.saltisfordcanal.co.uk/heritage/saltisford-history/

Shop and Office on the Saltisford Arm
Once a derelict backwater, the Saltisford arm is now full of boats moored in an almost park like setting. This building houses a small shop where you can buy canally stuff and also drinks and ice cream.

Saltisford Arm, Warwick
This stretch of canal was from 1800 the approach to the terminus of the Warwick and Birmingham Canal. It brought coal to supply Britain's first gasworks
Image A short connection to the Warwick and Napton Canal created a more direct route between Birmingham and London than had existed before: it became part of the Grand Union Canal. Now a spur, the Saltisford Arm is managed by a trust as a haven for residential boats.
