1960s Town houses, Emscote Gardens
A local firm, AC Lloyd, included these 3-storey flat-roofed terraced town houses in several 1960s developments in Warwick, Leamington and Kenilworth. They were "built for a pin" according to one surveyor. A novel feature was the first-floor living room, kitchen and dining space. The houses had open frontages and integral garages, and originally had single-glazed metal windows and timber weatherboarding on the fronts. Most owners have by now opted for uPVC for both; some have added porches, and the modest garages tend to be either full of stuff or converted into downstairs kitchens. They are difficult to insulate and some insurance companies are nervous about the flat roofs. They have proved adaptable for different-sized households and they remain relatively cheap.

Surface water run-off in Kemp Close, Warwick
Recent rain finds its meandering way downslope in a residential street; the straight channel provided is not part of the plan. It's a wet, gloomy January afternoon.

LED street lighting, Kemp Close, southeast Warwick
Street lighting on the Emscote Gardens estate is turned off for about five hours at night. The Highway Authority has installed single LED lighting columns at or near junctions. They give a bright cold light. LED stands for light-emitting diode https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Light-emitting_diode

Raised shrub bed, Kemp Close
Until recently this little feature was filled with burgeoning ornamental shrubs, happily doing their own thing and screening Homebase's security fence and dull facade
Image But now they've been brutally hacked — at whose behest, one wonders?

Raised shrub bed, Kemp Close
A glorious display of berries on this tree Cotoneaster is a better outlook from the street than Homebase's razor wire and blank grey facade. We won't be able to enjoy it again for a bit: see

Lord Nelson public house, Emscote Road
The Nelson family once had a big gelatine factory in the area. The connection with Lord Nelson is wishful thinking.
The neighbouring shop sells clothing and equipment for outdoor pursuits but most of their business is believed to be by mail order and internet sales.
