Star & Garter (2) - sculpture of a pig, 4-6 Warwick Street, Royal Leamington Spa
Quite what the pig is doing outside the pub isn't really clear. Possibly it's to remind people that the pub does roast dinners? Other photos:- Image

Star & Garter (3) - sign, 4-6 Warwick Street, Royal Leamington Spa
The name has its origins in an abbreviation of the name of the insignia belonging to the "Noble Order of the Garter", which is the highest heraldic order that the British monarch can bestow. The star is eight pointed, although the one in the background on this sign has five points. The name is not uncommon for pubs and inns. Other photographs:- Image

Star & Garter (4) - detail, 4-6 Warwick Street, Royal Leamington Spa
The name is derived from the insignia of the "Noble Order of the Garter", which is the highest heraldic order that the British monarch can bestow. The motto "Honi soit qui mal y pense" can be translated in various ways, usually to something like "Shame on him who thinks this evil", which is the version given on the official website of the British Monarchy. At school, long ago in the 1950's, we were always given the translation "Evil to him who evil thinks". Other photographs:- Image

Scaffolding, south side of Warwick Street, Leamington
The site being developed on the corner of New Brook Street has been dark, damp and derelict for many years. The cream-painted building down the street is the Star and Garter public house. The three-armed New Brook Street flats show through the scaffolding.
