The name is derived from the insignia of the "Noble Order of the Garter", which is the highest heraldic order that the British monarch can bestow. The motto "Honi soit qui mal y pense" can be translated in various ways, usually to something like "Shame on him who thinks this evil", which is the version given on the official website of the British Monarchy. At school, long ago in the 1950's, we were always given the translation "Evil to him who evil thinks". Other photographs:- Image
