Down Class C fitted freight passing Rugby with two Type 1 Diesels
View eastward, towards London etc., LMR West Coast Main Line. In 1959 Dieselisation was in its early stages, but these English-Electric/Vulcan Type 1 1,000hp Bo-Bo, the first (built in 1957) of a production series that proved very successful, especially when used in pairs as seen here: Nos. D8000 + D8002 are probably on the 14.55 Camden - Crewe fast freight. (The girder-bridge in the distance carried the ex-Great Central main line over the WCML). After withdrawal in 10/80, No. D8000 (by then No. 20050) received the honour of preservation at the National Railway Museum, York.

Continental freight through Rugby
It may be thought that rail freight from continental Europe (other than shipping containers) only started with the Channel Tunnel in the 1990s, but in fact there were such services before, using ferry crossings. Here, electric locomotive 85004 hauls a train of miscellaneous French and German wagons northwards through Rugby station.
