An early attempt to provide social housing for his employees, Victorian entrepreneur Cash built his factory on the top of the houses: The employees thus lived underneath their communal workspace. This unique block still survives, as listed buildings. It is adjacent to the canal - near Cash's Bridge. I am indebted to John Brightley for this information.

The rear of the east range of the former weavers' cottages/factory. Study of old Ordnance Survey 1:2500 and 1:500 maps show that in 1887 the 2 ranges of cottages stood at some distance from any other housing. By 1905 Cash's had added a large factory building in the area here and terraced housing had begun to spring up nearby. 1906 shows another mill (factory) to the SE of Cash's bridge and motor works starting to appear in the general neighbourhood. By 1937 the area is completely built up. The 1951 map shows a gap in the cottages and less factory buildings, some having been lost during WWII.

Cash's is a familiar name to many people, because they manufactured the woven name tapes that identified the owners of millions of items of clothing worn by school pupils. (I remember with horror the herculean task of sewing the wretched things on hundreds of school uniform items - and also on my mother's clothes when she was about to move into a care home.) These houses were built by the Cash company for their workers. They have living accommodation on the lower floors and workshops on the top floor to make the maximum use of the available daylight. They are now desirable residences.

One of the rows of houses created as part of Cash's Model Factory, in 1857. Originally providing individual workshops above the cottages, the former were later linked to become a common factory area. The scheme never worked properly as a single factory and a new purpose-built factory was later constructed to the west of the terrace. Listed Grade II.
