Changes in Hales Street
The pocket park that temporarily occupied the vacant plot in Hales Street hs been replaced by construction work on a 5, 8 and 11 storey building planned for mixed commercial and student accommodation use. The mobile crane, which would not fit into shot, was in the process of lifting a piece of the tower crane on the right into place. In 2014: Image]

Millennium Place crowds
Crowds gathering in Millennium Place at a little before 7am to watch the first runner of the day leave at the start of the Coventry to Leicester day 45 leg of the Olympic torch relay. The pigeons on the Whittle Arch are getting the best view. From here the runner went via Fairfax Street to Priory Street and past the cathedral to Broadgate. Visible beyond the arch is the old fire station and, to its right, the bus station entrance. In the foreground is the green of a pocket park created on the site of the Smithfield Hotel, demolished a few years ago as part of a development that never materialised. The large spheres dotted about are part of new traffic calming measures to declutter the roads of signs and traffic lights and create traffic/pedestrian shared spaces. It's not quite working yet, vehicles being bigger and harder than people.

Steel discs in Millennium Place, marking capital cities in Central Africa
These stainless steel discs set into the paving of Millennium Place in central Coventry mark Coventry itself, its twin and sister cities around the world and the capital cities of the world's states. They form part of the installation ‘Time Zone Clock’ by Françoise Schein. This depicted the time zones of the world with aluminium strips and LED lights, which have since been removed. The discs with names of cities in raised lettering have survived, however. Those visible here depict African capital cities: Kinshasa (Democratic Republic of the Congo), Libreville (Gabon), Yaoundé (Cameroon), Brazzaville (Republic of the Congo) and Bangui (Central African Republic). Coventry does not have any sister cities in this part of the world.

Steel discs in Millennium Place, marking German cities
Three stainless steel discs set into the pavement of Millennium Place, part of the installation ‘Time Zone Clock’ by Françoise Schein. This depicted the time zones of the world with aluminium strips and LED lights (these strips and lights have since been removed) and the capital cities and twin cities of Coventry as steel discs with the names in raised lettering (these survive). These three depict German cities, the capital, Berlin, and Coventry’s two German twin cities, Kiel (in the former West Germany) and Dresden (formerly in East Germany).
