Showing the new Orangery Tea Rooms to the right. The extension was part of the restoration and improvement project in 2009-10 with financial aid from the Heritage Fund and Canterbury City Council. The original building dates from the late 18th century and used to be a private residence. It is now managed by Whitstable Castle Trust, a charitable organisation consisting of local volunteers and elected Councillors.

Whitstable: the castle
More a stately home than a castle in the sense of defence, the original house stood downhill of the present building. There is a history of the building on the Castle website http://www.whitstablecastle.co.uk/whitstable-castle-history.php although it does not state exactly when the present building dates from. It was bought by the town council in 1935 and the grounds were opened to the public in 1948. Upon the abolition of Whitstable Urban District Council with local government reorganisation in 1972, it stood empty for a few years before a committee was established to reinvigorate the castle and making it a community building. Today, a fair was being held with children's amusements, stalls for local businesses, and live music performances on the higher lawn at the back.

Whitstable Castle
Whitstable Castle is an 18th-century mansion, originally built in 1790 by a local businessman named Pearson Thompson. Thompson had made his fortune in the shipping industry and wanted a home to reflect his wealth and status. The castle was designed by the architect James Wyatt. In the 19th century, the castle was owned by a wealthy merchant named John Lubbock, who made extensive renovations to the building. During World War II, the castle was used as a headquarters for the Home Guard. After the war, the castle fell into disrepair and was eventually sold to the local council. The castle is now run by a community trust, which is dedicated to preserving its history and heritage.
