Grave of Samuel Plimsoll MP, St Martin's churchyard, Cheriton
Samuel Plimsoll (1824-1898), Liberal MP for Derby, was a social reformer most noted for his work on safety at sea, which saw him dubbed "the sailor's friend". Responding to the practice of shipowners sending unsafe and overloaded "coffin ships" to sea without regard for the safety of their crews, he worked to introduce a mandatory indicator on a ship's hull of what its maximum safe load would be: the so-called "Plimsoll Line" which is still seen on all ocean-going vessels and which can be seen here on his grave. He died at Folkestone and is buried here with his second wife, Hannah (née Frankish).

Grave of Lewis Arthur Drake-Brockman
An unusual war casualty: as the gravestone explains, Lewis Arthur Drake-Brockman, Captain in the Royal Marine Light Infantry, was killed in Russia whilst serving as the Major in command of a battalion of Karelians in 1919, part of the western intervention into the civil war in Russia in the years immediately following the Bolshevik takeover.
The Drake-Brockman family have deep roots in the Cheriton area, several having served as Rector of this church and many having been baptised, married or buried in it.
