An unusual war casualty: as the gravestone explains, Lewis Arthur Drake-Brockman, Captain in the Royal Marine Light Infantry, was killed in Russia whilst serving as the Major in command of a battalion of Karelians in 1919, part of the western intervention into the civil war in Russia in the years immediately following the Bolshevik takeover. The Drake-Brockman family have deep roots in the Cheriton area, several having served as Rector of this church and many having been baptised, married or buried in it.
