Crampton Tower, Broadstairs
Designed by Thomas Crampton for the Broadstairs Water Company which he formed in 1859, Listed Grade II. Crampton was an engineer, born in Broadstairs, particularly well known during early railway development for a distinctive style of locomotive with large driving wheels behind rather than under the boiler giving a low centre of gravity and making for a stable locomotive capable of fast running for its period. He was an innovator in a wide range of subjects and the tower now houses a museum of his achievements.

Crampton Tower
Complete with seagull. Thomas Russel Crampton is chiefly remembered as a designer of locomotives and of railways, but he was also concerned with gas supply, water works and submarine telegraph cables. He was the first to succeed in laying an effective telegraph cable under the English Channel. The tower (built in 1859) formed part of the first public water supply system in Broadstairs. It now houses a small museum - see http://www.cramptontower.co.uk/.
