Coloma School, Upper Shirley Road, Croydon
The school opened on this site in September 1965 as a three-form entry Roman Catholic girls' grammar school. It later became comprehensive, and rapidly acquired an excellent reputation for academic results. The school has expanded greatly since this photograph was taken, and this view is no longer possible because of building extensions.

Coloma Convent Girls School, Shirley, Croydon
This school was first founded in 1869 in premises near the centre of Croydon. The school moved into new buildings shown here in 1965. This view is no longer possible, as the lawn has now been built over to provide a Sixth Form centre.

Thirty years ahead of its time?
With the wave of interest in electrically-propelled private cars, people tend to forget that these have been around for a very long time - some say longer than the internal combustion-engined car. This picture, taken as long ago as 1977, shows an electric car being demonstrated to an interested group of female students, some of whom later were able to drive it for a short distance.

Extensions at Shirley Court
This large house, once a gentleman's residence, has for many years been the home of nuns of the order Daughters of Mary and Joseph, who were responsible for the nearby Coloma Convent Girls' School. But now the nuns have moved out to other accommodation, and the house has been adapted as a Music Centre for the school, with (at the left) the addition of an impressive Performance Centre. The school itself has the status of a Special Music School, (and also a Special Science School.)
