Weather-boarded house by Morden Hall Park
These days weather-boarded houses and industrial buildings are scarce in South London and neighbouring areas of Surrey. From the evidence of 19th century photographs we know that there were once many more. A few - including this one - still exist close to the River Wandle, between Morden and Mitcham. The Wandle Valley was the focus for much early industry, with many water-mills sited along its length. It also gave rise to the Surrey Iron Railway - Britain's first public railway, dating from before the age of steam. This tall building stands next to the 'Surrey Arms', and backs on to Morden Hall Park. I would be interested to know what its original function was, and how it came to survive. Notice that the roof has a 'valley' between two ridges - so that technically this would be described as a double-pile house.

Tall, weather-boarded house by the 'Surrey Arms'
These days weather-boarded houses and industrial buildings are scarce in South London and neighbouring areas of Surrey. From the evidence of 19th century photographs we know that there were once many more, and that weather-boarding was very characteristic of the area. A few such buildings still exist close to the River Wandle, between Morden and Mitcham. I know nothing of the building's history, but would hazard a guess that it could be 180 years old. It would be interesting to know its original function (could it have been a tavern?) and how it came to survive when so many of its contemporaries were allowed to decay, or were pulled down. The building stands next to the Surrey Arms, at a bend in the A239 (Morden Road).

The Surrey Arms and White Cottage
Two buildings on Morden Road. The Surrey Arms, on the left, dates from around 1929, replacing a previous weatherboarded establishment from the 1840s. The weatherboarded White Cottage dates from the late 18th Century and is grade II listed - see https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1080910?section=official-list-entry.
