Croydon: Waddon Road
Looking east from its junction with the A23. Some of the high-rise buildings in the centre of Croydon can be seen in the distance. The road does not provide an easy 'rat run', as at the far end it loses itself in a maze of one-way streets in the centre, and access to car parks is difficult this way. The bus in the distance is on Route 410.

The Hare and Hounds, Purley Way, Croydon
The whole landscape around the middle Purley Way is a Ballardesque expanse of dual carriageway, car parks and retail sheds, with the odd nineteenth-century building like this stranded in the middle of it all.

For as many years as I can remember, I've admired the exterior ironwork on this pub.

Croydon: The 'Hare and Hounds', Purley Way
It must be many years since hare were hunted around here, but the pub lives on, in what is not an easy environment. It is on a main road, part of the A23, but most traffic is in a hurry and goes straight past without a glance. The 'Hare and Hounds' was opened in 1773, and originally it was on a quiet lane called Waddon Marsh Lane, which in 1925 became the route of Purley Way.
