The Lone Protester
When it was proposed to re-introduce trams to Croydon (which had not run since 1950), there was opposition, mainly from those who always travelled by motorcar and feared the trams would get in the way. A society was formed, called 'TRAMSTOP!' and Mr Les Hartridge was one of the prime movers. When work actually started, Mr Hartridge was not to be deterred, but took up his position on top of the underpass with his banner of protest. I do not know if Mr Hartridge is still alive: I admire his courage, if not his opinions!

Croydon
With the East Croydon tram stop closed for removal of glass roofing panels, the only services running were a shuttle between Wimbledon and Wellesley Road, with a return service from George Street to Wimbledon. Out of service trams were parked in George Street, ready to form the departures to Wimbledon. The departing tram had previously been parked beside the distant tram, whilst another tram was about to arrive from the left of picture.

Statue at 96 George Street, Croydon.
I've no idea who or what it commemorates, but I liked the idea of a sculpture of a horse jumping a fence!

Park Lane and Wellesley Road, Croydon
Looking north from outside the Fairfield Halls , Croydon had a strikingly modern appearance already in 1977. The view from here has changed very little since then.
