South Croydon: South End
The building just peeping in on the right is the Tree House pub: it has had several names since it used to be the Blue Anchor. A bit further down the street, but here out of picture on the left, is the former 'Swan and Sugar Loaf' which has been turned into a supermarket.

Cut down former tram pole
The dark coloured pole towards the centre of the picture is cut down from a full length pole which supported the overhead wires for the trams which operated through South Croydon until the early nineteen fifties.

Croydon: The 'Tree House'
According to Peter Walker's excellent 'Croydon and its Pubs', this establishment was originally opened as the 'Anchor' in 1644, though of course this is not the original building. It was later renamed as the 'Blue Anchor', but after several changes of names it has now settled down as the 'Tree House'. Local unkind jibes suggest that it might only be occupied by monkeys.
