Sailing barge, The Hythe, Colchester
With no visible name, although it appears to be a going concern, or nearly so. Rigged like a Thames barge, its hull shape suggests it was not built as such.

Sailing barge at the Hythe
The River Colne no longer sees trading vessels, as the port closed in 2001. Several houseboats are moored at the quay, where once coastal vessels would discharge their cargoes.

Haven Bridge
Since 1996 the Haven Bridge has been the bridging point on the Colne. It divides the Victorian architecture of the Hythe Quay from the later King Edward Quay. Hythe Quay is the far side of the bridge. It is worth noting that locals have never made any distinction between the two and they were both known collectively as “The Hythe”. To the left of the picture is Wheelers Scrap Metal Merchants, the flower tubs and fancy lamps are probably the work of Image

Colne Dredger - engine
The inverted vertical compound engine driving the bucket ladder of the now retired Colne Dredger. The vessel is seen at work here - Image The hull and engine were built in 1959 by the Rowhedge Ironworks Co Ltd of Colchester. The non condensing engine was works No. E712 with cylinders 7" & 14" x 9". The high pressure cylinder had a piston valve and the low pressure a slide valve. Stephenson link reversing motion was fitted to allow the ladder to be reversed to clear an obstruction. The ladder drive was by belts so there was the possibility of slipping if an obstruction was hit. I believe the engine has been reused.

Roundabout with column, The Hythe, Colchester
At the town end of the Colne Causeway bridge, and therefore the road and roundabout are of no great age. Whether the column is also new or a rebuild of something old here I don't know. There is a similar column, but in red brick, on the roundabout on the other side of the Colne.
