Stoke by Clare village sign
The sign has a background of oak leaves, upon which is a mitre representing Stoke College, below is Stoke Bridge flanked by a Suffolk Punch and a Suffolk black face sheep. The ears of corn represent the farming community and the agricultural heritage. In the centre is one of the country’s meanest men, John Elwes the renowned Georgian miser MP and reputed role model for Dickens’ Scrooge character from A Christmas Carol. He lived at Claret Hall, east of the village. The River Stour is represented by the wavy lines beneath the bridge. https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/6782070

Passing The Lion, Stoke-by-Clare ? 1971
The Lion is still a functioning inn, and dates back to the 17th century.
Theobald's Coaches of Long Melford provided this bus service between Sudbury and Haverhill. LDL626 is a Bedford SB with Duple coach-style body, new to Isle of Wight operator Southern Vectis in 1955. It was typical practice for small operators to use older coach-type vehicles on low frequency bus services when they were no longer suitable for quality coaching use.
This is one of a series of views featuring buses in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. http://www.geograph.org.uk/search.php?i=137652761
