The sign has a background of oak leaves, upon which is a mitre representing Stoke College, below is Stoke Bridge flanked by a Suffolk Punch and a Suffolk black face sheep. The ears of corn represent the farming community and the agricultural heritage. In the centre is one of the country’s meanest men, John Elwes the renowned Georgian miser MP and reputed role model for Dickens’ Scrooge character from A Christmas Carol. He lived at Claret Hall, east of the village. The River Stour is represented by the wavy lines beneath the bridge. https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/4294726
